Synesthesia is a Snarky Puppy inspired funk chart that is shaped specifically for the UNT One O’Clock Lab Band (and now any large professional ensemble).

When I first listened to Snarky Puppy’s 2014 and 2015 albums in high school I went years without realizing a lot of the songs were in odd meters. They just felt good and grooving, and that’s the effect I’m going for with Synesthesia; complicated musical effects that come off naturally. I also wanted to have the chart be a connection between pushing forward into new genres, grooves, and effects while still remaining heavily steeped in the blues. Synesthesia is very experimental with instrumentation, rhythms, voicings, meters, modulations, and instrument pairings. It isn’t designed to be played by just anyone. The chart includes an alto solo, a trumpet solo, and solis for all the sections while also showing off an organ, key bass, and many other mutes and double soprano sax.
