This arrangement of Nicholas Payton’s “Kimathi” is meant to bring a hybrid genre of Black American Music to the UNT One O’Clock Lab Band. The original is dedicated to the head of African-American studies at Howard University , Dr. Greg Kimathi Carr . The chart includes a Flugelhorn melody, Trombone and Fender Rhodes solos, an ensemble feature, and a trumpet solo over a lively vamp to end it all. It aims to be danceable, accessible, and enjoyable for listeners and players alike.
