Big Band (5/4/4/5) + Female Vocal
- Style: Jazz Ballad / Medium Swing
- Grade 4: High School / Collegiate
- ~7:00
- Soloists: Vibraphone, Trombone 2, Female Vocal
This arrangement is meant to be a new take on this jazz standard heavily based in the tradition of vocalists like Nancy Wilson and Samara Joy. This arrangement extends the story of the song with added lyrics and a solo section to represent the arrogant husband telling his wife about his day. There is a lot of word painting and symbolism of the lyrics reflected in the harmony. This can be jarring at first but it hopefully provides something new and interesting to this fantastic standard that hasn’t been heard before.
The chart includes bucket mute for all brass as well as harmon mute for one trumpet, and flute and clarinet doublings for the soli that can be left out if necessary .
The chart can also be simplified by leaving out the vibraphone intro, and the verse duet between piano and vocals out front. This in turn, makes the vibraphone part optional. The chart can be started at B or C and work wonderfully as well. This will also simplify the arrangement but leaving out the tricky keys in the introduction.
The end of the chart is tricky and should be rehearsed to make sure everyone understands when they move in all the different fermatas. This false ending is meant to paint the story of getting a happy ending (E major) but not the happy ending you were expecting (C major).
